The History of the United States Mint

The United States Mint is the official coin factory for the United States government and manufactures the legal-tender American coinage that you find in your pocket change. While most of us carry around “pennies” (officially called one-cent coins), nickels, dimes, and quarters in our pockets and purses, or perhaps have a jar full of them at home, few really think about the United States Mint and its story.

It’s perhaps safe to say that most Americans don’t realize the U.S. Mint even makes anything other than the four denominations – cents, nickels, dimes, and quarters – that most of us are familiar with using for cash transactions. And some people mistakenly believe the U.S. Mint also prints “paper” currency. But that’s the job of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing – and the subject of another story for another day! Read More

2022 W $1 Colorized Purple Heart Hall of Honor Coin (70)

The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have been wounded or killed in enemy action. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor’s mission is to commemorate the service and sacrifice of the men and women who were killed or wounded in action, representing Purple Heart recipients from the Civil War to the present day.

The National Purple Heart Honor Mission is dedicated to paying tribute to our nation's combat wounded through special outreach and educational programming. The U.S. Mint is helping in that tribute with the creation of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Colorized Silver Dollar. A strict mintage of only 25,000 coins will be observed.

The Obverse features a colorized Purple Heart with the bust of George Washington inset into the field. The inscription reads, “COMBAT WOUNDED & KILLED IN ACTION,” “LIBERTY,” “1932,” “2022,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Five stars represent the branches of the military. It was in 1932 that General Douglas MacArthur renamed the Badge of Military Merit as the Purple Heart.

The Reverse depicts a nurse in a World War I helmet as she bandages a wounded service member on a stretcher. More than 23,000 women nurses served in the Army and Navy during that war. The inscription states, “UNITED STATES of AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

With each National Purple Heart Hall of Honor 2022 Colorized Silver Dollar that is purchased, $10 is paid to the National Purple Heart Honor Mission, Inc., to support its mission, including capital improvements to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor facilities. Additionally, the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) is also donating $2 to the foundation for each commemorative Purple Heart Silver Dollar that it grades.
